The new cycle of beach lines are begging to be drawn and since beaches move, so do the setback lines. For now, the issues with new lines are years away. Sadly the natural progression of unstable barrier islands will be undeniable when water levels continue to rise and land lowering issues collide along coastal SC.
For now federal, state and local governments continue pumping sand that is subject to being washed away with the next coastal storm without questioning the viability of such measures long term. Recent cracks in the foundation of SC Beachfront Management are showing up and preservation of the public beach for the benefit of everyone is increasingly in conflicting with private property rights.
Sadly the SC Legislature is responsible for chipping away at SC Landmark Beachfront Management Act in the name of our robust tourism industry and in favor of more beachfront development when they abandoned retreat and replaced it with preservation of the beach in 2018.
