Balancing the needs of nature and the spaces for thriving ecosystems in the coastal zone is easy if we choose to ignore foreseeable consequences to natures gifts in pursuit of human wants over natures needs. Complicating matters has always been the evolution of scientific knowledge on complex ecosystems and the unanswered questions that need further study. Ignoring what we do know in making decisions that impact coastal ecosystems fails the balance test when nature is silent.
